The work of Mire Lee fuses volatile substances with traditional sculptural materials and industrial remnants to produce haunting objects and installations. Equally beautiful and grotesque, her sinuous compositions twist into positions that evoke bodies, entrails and skeletal forms and touch upon notions of psychological tension and trauma. Following upon Lee’s major installation at Tate’s Turbine Hall last year, Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to present the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

Since the early 1990s, Andrea Zittel has used the arena of day-to-day life to develop and test prototypes for living structures and situations in order to understand the world at large. Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers, on the occasion of Berlin Art Week, are pleased to announce a solo exhibition of the artist’s latest project, Public Performance of the Self. Zittel’s newest work hinges on the dual meaning of the term ‘to perform’, which signifies both to conduct an action and to present oneself to an audience. Zittel ‘performs herself’, participating in the various activities of everyday life in the public realm while documenting with a phone camera and written reports. With subtle dry humour, Zittel touches on both personal and universal themes – mental well-being, social roles, online culture, and her own art-making – engaging with the enduring question of how we craft and present ourselves to others.

Throughout the work of Kaari Upson, the home and the body are persistent themes, from her earliest installations and sculptures from “The Larry Project” to her later series drawn from the contents of her childhood home. House to Body Shift explores how the late artist delved into the rich connections between our selves and our domestic surroundings, both physically and psychologically and across familial generations. As with artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Robert Gober and Paul McCarthy before her, the home in Upson’s practice becomes a surreal site of trauma, memory and intrigue.
